1. When do students learn to play instruments? How do we join Band or Orchestra?
2. Are there musical activities after school?
3. Where do we rent or buy an instrument, find a private lesson teacher, find a summer music camp, or find a children's ensemble to participate in? Please see the Resources page for a document that will help you with all of those needs!
- The short answer is 6th grade. Mrs. Higgins teaches 6th grade Orchestra, 7th grade Band, 8th-12th grade Band and 7th-12th grade String Orchestra. The 6th orchestra includes strings (violin, viola, cello, bass), woodwinds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone), brass (trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba), and percussion (drums, bells, accessory percussion). Previous experience is not required. Most students will be expected to rent or purchase an instrument. Students will be given more information about this opportunity at the end of their 5th grade year.
- K-5 music classes include the use of boomwhackers and accessory percussion as well as singing, reading and writing rhythms and pitches on the treble clef, which gives them a solid starting point for any future instrumental instruction.
- 3rd-5th grade students play recorders during music class February-April. If you do not currently have a recorder, they are ordered each year in January.
- 5th grade students learn to play guitar during music class April-May. School-owned guitars are used.
2. Are there musical activities after school?
- Students with previous experience playing violin, viola, cello or bass may join the Lower School String Ensemble, which is an after school club that may return in 2017
- Students in grades 3-6 may participate in Ms. Ortgies' Choir Club, after school on Thursdays.
